Job Description
A School Nurse is responsible for promoting the health and well-being of students and staff by providing medical care, health education, and emergency response services. They play a key role in maintaining a safe and healthy school environment.
Key Responsibilities
Provide first aid and emergency care to students and staff.
Assess and treat minor injuries and illnesses.
Administer prescribed medications and maintain proper documentation.
Monitor and manage chronic health conditions (e.g., asthma, diabetes, allergies).
Conduct health screenings (vision, hearing, BMI checks).
Maintain student health records and ensure compliance with immunization and health regulations.
Develop and implement individualized health care plans (IHPs) for students with medical needs.
Educate students, staff, and parents on health-related topics (hygiene, nutrition, disease prevention).
Collaborate with teachers, counselors, and parents to support student well-being.
Report and manage communicable diseases as per school and public health guidelines.
Assist with mental health concerns and refer students to appropriate services if needed.
Qualifications & Skills
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
License/Certification: Registered Nurse (RN) license required; School Nurse Certification may be required depending on the state.
Experience: Previous experience in pediatric, public health, or school nursing is beneficial.
Skills: Strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills; ability to work independently and handle emergencies effectively.
